Denver Florists, Wedding Hair Styles, part II

Today we're talking about hair styles. We've done them before but you can never have to many. Try this one and send us some pictures of how you did.  ( see pictures in step order below )

The Half and Half

For this romantic look, consider flushed, glowing skin a requirement. Paul & Joe Creamy Cheek Powder blush in butterfly, beautyhabit.com. Camisole, Julianne, journelle.com. Earrings, Fantasia for Jennifer Miller Jewelry; necklace, Roni Blanshay, jennifermillerjewelry.com. Ring, harrywinston.com. Brooch, Camilla Dietz Bergeron, cdbltd.com.

Step 1

Use a large-barrel curling iron to create loose curls all around your head, from the ears down.

Step 2

Part your hair in the middle, and use your fingers to loosen and separate the curls.

Step 3

Starting halfway down the part, begin spritzing your roots with hairspray. Continue to the crown

Step 4

To create height and volume, tease the sprayed hair with a fine-tooth comb.

Step 5

Use a brush to gently smooth the teased hair, and gather the sides up into a half ponytail.

Step 6

Secure the sides with pins, then use your fingers to gently shape the curls into place

Step 7

End with shine spray. Try John Frieda Frizz-Ease 100% Shine Glossing Mist, at drugstores.

Denver Florists, DIY make-up tips

The Fast Track to Glowing Skin    ( see more info below picture )

Achieving a dewy complexion doesn't require a heap of products, beauty school, or a year of prep. These doctor-approved smart regimens will do the job in just four short weeks.

Find out what routine is right for you and which products can work wonders based on your skin type.

If You Have Dry Skin

You're missing natural oils that help keep skin healthy-looking and trigger cell turnover, which makes it smooth.

Your Skin Routine: Morning and night, reach for a hydrating lotion like First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream ( Sephora ) that contains glycerin, ceramides, or hyaluronic acid. Twice a week, use a micro-bead, soap-free scrub like Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Brightening. If you're uber-sensitive, try a cold whole-milk compress instead.

Instant Fix: Apply an illuminating liquid foundation with a damp makeup sponge. Try Sephora Collection Instant Radiance Foundation.

If You Have Normal Skin

Even balanced complexions with regular oil production need a boost.

Your Skin Routine: Sweep 10 percent glycolic acid pads ( Beauty rx ) over a clean face daily -- or every other day if you're irritation-prone. Follow with a moisturizer with SPF. To exfoliate and deep clean, apply an alpha hydroxy mask like Sephora's Nude Miracle Mask for 15 minutes once a week.

Instant Fix: Use a flesh-toned highlighter on the tops of your cheeks and along brow bones -- we like L'Oreal Paris Magic Lumi Highlighter.

  If You Have Oily Skin

Reign in the slick the right way. "Don't over-cleanse," ( we asked a dermatologist in New York City we know) "it could cause more oil."

Your Skin Routine: Apply 0.05 to 0.1 percent retinol like Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Serum to clean skin at night; it'll remove dead cells trapped under excess sebum and help decrease oil production, too. Follow with a light, oil-free moisturizer. A weekly salicylic acid peel like the Suki Renewal Bio-Resurfacing Facial Peel will keep pores free of buildup.

Instant Fix: Get rid of shine with a mattifier before applying makeup. Try Professional Mattifying Gel.

The Details (from left): Lanvin tuxedo (MR Porter); Seize sur Vingt shirt and bow tie (212-625-1620). Vivienne Westwood Man tuxedo (323-951-0707); Dior Homme shirt; Phineas Cole tie ( Paul Stuart ). Denver Florists, make-up tips, wedding make-up

Make-up tips ( see photo at end )

ok, here's the 2nd part of yestedays look, today we'll be covering eyes, cheeks and lips. Send us some photos after you try it, we'd love to see you.

Ease into Eyes

The beauty of classic dark liner? It looks great on everyone and defines a captivating gaze that is visible in any photo. Follow these six steps for a soft, romantic take, or sub in smokier shadows to amp up your makeup.

Curl Lashes and Define Brows

"Both steps open up and frame the eyes". To fill in brows, hold an ash-toned pencil horizontally (warm shades photograph red) and use short, quick strokes to apply color from the inner eye outward. Then blend with a brush; We like Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil.

Layer Cream and Shadow

Start by dabbing a shimmery beige cream onto your lids that helps brighten eyes with its light-catching flecks. Try Essence Stay All Day Long Lasting Eyeshadow in Glammy Goes To ( ulta ).

Next brush powder shadow from lash to crease. The cream underneath acts like primer, helping powder stay put. Pick a matte hue one tone darker than the base shadow so sparkle peeks through beautifully, not blindingly. We used MAC Cosmetics Eye Shadow in Bamboo.

  Add Mascara

Wipe off the wand, then wiggle it at the roots of lashes to deposit extra color; this plumps up fine hairs and forms a tacky base for falsies. Sweep to tips and repeat. Opt for a water-resistant formula like CoverGirl LashBlast 24HR Mascara

Snip and Place False Lashes

Cut a clear strip into small clusters of six strands. Skip the tricky tweezers and grab one bunch with your fingers, then dip it in glue. Blow on it, and attach to the outer corner of your lash line. Lay sections side by side until you reach the iris. Ardell Invisiband Lashes in #108 work well ( sallybeauty ).

Trace Lids

For an even line, create small dashes from the inner to outer corner of your upper lash line, getting thicker as you go. Connect them. We like Smashbox Jet Set Eyeliner in Jet Black.

Finish with Cheeks and Lips

Flash photography and a white dress can add up to a pale wedding-day look -- but not with these warm hints of blooming color. They'll keep your skin rosy and radiant from first glance to last dance.

Brush on Bronzer

Sweep it under your cheekbones, then dust your temples, forehead, and the bridge of the nose with the powder left behind on the bristles. Physicians Formula Magic Mosaic Multi-Colored Custom Bronzer works on all tones

Dab on Cream Blush

A dusty rose, blended onto the apples of the cheeks when you're smiling, will lock in your powder-blush's hue. Nars Cream Blush in Penny Lane works great.

Tap On Powder Blush

Unlike sweeping it on, this technique gives the center of your cheeks a healthy flush that looks au naturel. Less is more -- your lip color will help enliven skin, too. Opt for a sheer, pink shade like Estee Lauder Pure Color Blush in Electric Pink.

Fill In Lips

Instead of outlining, rub a rose pencil from the middle of the mouth outward. This way you’ll have evenly shaded lips when lipstick wears off. Clinique Quickliner for Lips in Neutrally is a good choice.

Apply Lipstick

Put it on straight from the tube to deposit the most color. Press it in with your finger, trace lips with concealer to prevent it bleeding, and blend in cover-up. We like Dior Addict Extreme Lipstick in Cherie Bow

There you go, everything you need to be even more gorgeous than you are now.

Denver Florists, DIY make-up tips

DIY Make-up tips

Tip #1 - Practice Makes Prettier

What makes this sublime look so versatile? It flatters all complexions, and you can do it yourself. Get makeup instructions even shaky hands can't flub.

Our first tip? You'll need more makeup than usual if it's going to last all day and be beautiful in pics. "What seems great in person can appear washed out on film". Have a friend snap photos, and adjust till you're satisfied. ( see more tips after picture )

Tip #2

Your Toolbox

Smart essentials -- like these Laura Mercier brushes and other problem solvers -- will do half the work for you:

Sponges to calm jittery fingers (beauty.com); Q-Tips dipped in makeup remover to fix smudges. A wide-cage eyelash curler to create smooth curves ( shiseido ); Oil-absorbing papers to lift shine ( earth therapeutics ); Visine Maximum Redness Relief Formula to brighten eyes. Wet cleansing clothes to exfoliate lips and prep them for color

Tip #3

Start with Your Skin

Just as with a well-built house, a solid foundation ensures your makeup will stand the test of time (and a night of celebrating!).

Tip #4

Prep Your Canvas

All skin types should use an oil-free lotion for a dewy -- not shiny -- finish. Then, tap on a lightweight eye gel to smooth fine lines. Try Lancome Bienfait Aqua Vital Lotion and SK-II Advanced Eye Treatment Gel.

Tip #5

Apply Primer with Fingers

"It blurs deep pores and helps makeup go on evenly and stay put longer". We recommend Korres Pomegranate Mattifying Primer ( sephora ).

Tip #6

Sponge on Foundation and Add Concealer

For your foundation, drop a quarter-size amount of liquid base onto the back of your hand, dip in a damp sponge, and perfect the middle of your face first, where skin is often reddest. Work out toward your ears, skipping eyelids. We like Clinique Even Better Foundation.

For your concealer, ( our friend Heather Currie, a Los Angeles makeup artist ), uses two formulas: a creamy kind for the action-packed eye area, and a drier one to stick to blemishes. She suggests Amazing-Cosmetics Amazing-Concealer ( ulta ) and Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer ( barneys ).

Tip #7

Brush on Powder

Dust your T-zone with a translucent version to absorb oil, keeping the rest bare for a fresh-faced glow. Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder gives a polished finish ( sephora ).

Tips 8 through 19 will follow tomorrow. Stay tuned for eyes and lips

Denver Florists, DIY Wedding Hair Style

Need a great hair style for your wedding? Try it for a night out also.   ( click links at bottom for more information on each product. see the pictures at bottom to help follow along  )

Style - Pressed Waves

With its face-framing curls, "this look is just as polished as any updo,"
Step 1 - Basic Blow-Out

Spray damp roots with a thickener like John Frieda Blow Dry Lotion Root Booster. Twist pieces of hair and pin them back. Then, blow-dry each one with a round brush, bending the ends under

Step 2 - Create Curls

Take a 2-inch section of hair from the front of your head and mist it with medium-hold hair spray; try Oscar Blandi Lacca Hairspray ( Sephora ). Curl it under with a 1-inch-barreled curling iron, and hold for 5 seconds before releasing. A favorite is Hot Tools Professional 1" Curling Iron. ( $29.00 - amazon )

Step 3 - Roll Each Ringlet

Roll the ringlet up around your finger to create a circle, and secure with a clip that won't form creases, such as Salon Care Metal Duckbill Clips ( Sally Beauty ). Repeat, working from your forehead to the nape of your neck, curling, twirling, and pinning, until all your hair is up. Let the pinned curls cool for 10 minutes to help set the style.

Step 4 - Let Loose

Unclip the bottom third of your curls, spritz them with hair spray, and lightly brush the ringlets into waves with a paddle brush. Then repeat with every pinned-up layer until all your hair is combed out, and rub a drop of serum onto your ends for extra shine. We like L'Oreal Paris EverStyle Smooth & Shine Serum

Denver Florists, Wedding Make-Up Tips, Eyes

Wedding Make Up Tips ( Eyes )

Rules of Enhancement  ( see pictures below )

What's the secret to a gorgeous gaze? Using soft washes of color to play up the shade you were born with. See how to do it, starting with these application tips:

Draw the liner along your upper lash line, from the inner curve of your iris outward. Smooth base shadow all over your lid with a brush. Then dust the crease of your lid with the darker shadow and blend with a clean brush. “Err on the subtle side,” says Collier Strong, a makeup artist in Los Angeles. And if you prefer neutral shades, black liner and bone shadow work well on everyone.

For Brown Eyes: Pick Purple

Almay Intense i-Color Liner in Amethyst.

Estee Lauder Pure Color Eyeshadow in Mischievous Mulberry  ( Estee Lauder ).

Trish McEvoy Eye Shadow in Glamorous  ( Trish McEvoy ).

For Blue Eyes: Go Bronze

Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Eye Enhancing Eyeliner Trio in Blue Eyes.

MAC Eye Shadow in Yogurt ( MAC ).

L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Ready-to-Wear Shadow Single in Deep Mocha.

For Hazel Eyes: Choose Ivy

Guerlain Eyeliner Pencil in Kohl Me Jungle ( Neiman Marcus ).

Make Up For Ever Eyeshadow in Fawn  ( Sephora ).

Shiseido Luminizing Satin Eye Colour in Kombu (Shiseido).

For Green Eyes: Try Burgundy

YSL Waterproof Eye Pencil in Shimmering Burgundy ( Yves Saint Laurent ).

Sephora Collection Colorful Mono Eyeshadow in Porcelain 25 ( Sephora ).

Lancome Color Design Eye Shadow in Colour du Jour ( Lancome ).

Denver Florists, Wedding Day Makeup Tips

Wedding Day Makeup Tips

If You're Going for Soft and Subtle ...

Opt for delicate pinks, peaches, and mauves. Keeping lipstick and blush in the same color family creates balance (as opposed to emphasizing one feature).
For Light Skin

Neutral shades with pink and beige tones counter redness in flush-prone faces. Try Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color in Uber Pink and Sonia Kashuk Beautifying Blush in Pink.

For Medium Skin

Bring out golden undertones by wearing peachy-caramel hues, such as Clinique's Long Last Lipstick in Baby Kiss and  Lancome's Blush Subtil in Sheer Amourose.

For Dark Skin

Rich mauves highlight lips and cheeks while letting skin shine through. We like Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bel Ami and Bare Minerals Ready Blush in The Confession.

If You're Going for Bold and Bright ...

If you want to wear eye-catching liner with a brighter lip, the rest of your face should play a supporting role. Pick a barely-there shade of blush and "brush it onto the hollows of your cheeks". Apply lip color with a brush (vivid tones require precision), blot, and repeat.

For Light Skin

Blue-based rose shades of Maybelline New York SuperStay Lipstick in Eternal Rose. and Laura Mercier Cheek Colour in Lotus Pink work for pale complexions.

For Medium Skin

Tomato-red lips and sunny cheeks are ideal for warm tones. Tom Ford Lip Color in Scarlet Rouge and Almay Powder Blush in Natural 110.

Denver Florists, New Wedding Rules

Whats the new trend in weddings for 2013? Do what ever you want.

Gone is the era of the cookie-cutter wedding; you can celebrate your own way. Forget the “have tos” and “shoulds” about nuptials. There are no hard-and-fast rules. Except one: Be a gracious bride and groom while letting your true style shine.

Dresses – You don’t have to wear white

No matter its hue, you'll look radiant in a knockout frock. Here, the bride is in a gold French lace "Long Ariel Dress," by Temperley London, so stunning it can only be a wedding gown. She's not just in good taste, she's also on trend: This season bridal designers showed scene-stealing creations in blush, pale blue, and even rich red.

Rings – You don’t have to have diamonds

Diamonds are some girls’ best friends, but other brides prefer garnets, pearls, or sapphires. As long as it came with a proposal, any stone can function as an engagement ring (ditto for the setting). You don't need to limit yourself to just one.

Receception Venue – create casual elegenace

You probably can’t spend lots of time with each guest. But you can promote an intimate at-home dinner-party atmosphere by surrounding invitees with a few of your favorite things. Create a unified table with the same flatware and china at each place, then fill the center with an array of beloved objects -- from registry gifts to a stash of personal curios.

The Details: Yamazaki Tableware “Byzantine” flatware. Baccarat “Mille nuits” wineglasses. Herend “Fish Scale” dinner plates.

Denver Florists, Wedding Invitation Ideas

Wedding Invitation Ideas

Need an idea for wedding invitations?

Proof that classic doesn't have to mean conventional: Mrs. John L. Strong hand-engraved "bespoke" stationery suite features a French fold, in which a sheet of paper is creased vertically and then folded horizontally. In the 18th and 19th centuries the formal technique was typical of invitations, but today it's an elegant and uncommon choice. Another unexpected old-school touch is the sweet motif of clasped hands embossed on the front.

William Yeoward Crystal "Civry dish; Smythson "Panama" notebook (212-265-4573);
Emma Stine "Sasha" earrings.

Denver Florists, Wedding Hair Accessories

Wedding Hair accesories.

What's the newest trend in wedding accessories? Hair pieces. Suttle, classy and stylish is the way to go, take a look at these and let us know what you think.

The smallest details can make the biggest impact; just take these elegant accessories. Thoughtfully placed, they'll accent your style's best asset -- be it graceful twists or soft texture -- with ease.
Picture #1, a headband tames frizz and flyaways and adds polish to a topknot. Jenny Packham's couture piece works the ombre trend, with hundreds of bugle beads gradating ( passing from one shade or tone to another ) from silver to champagne.

Picture #2 - Floral Comb

Relaxed updos become a touch more formal -- and far more secure -- when anchored with refined combs, like this organza-flower- and- feather one from Bride's Head Revisited
Picture #3 - Bobby Pin Baubles

Twigs and Honey 's made-to-order rhinestone-and-crystal "Sweet Pea" silver-plated bobby pins are a novel way to tuck back bangs or spotlight the curves of an elegant chignon.

Picture # - 5Crowning Clip

This rhinestone-and-silver beauty doesn't just hide the pins keeping a half-up, half-down style in place; it also draws attention to the hair's tousled waves. We like   Tessa Kim's "Alicia" headpiece.

Picture #5 - Florals

This is a sample of a floral hairpice we did here at our shop, if you don't care for the mass produced items bought in a store opt for a unique one of a kind piece designed by us. You can always preserve it after the wedding and have a special keepsake also.  www.thetwistedtulip.com

Denver Florists, Bridal Shower Tip

Just a tip on Picking a Date

A shower is usually held two to four months before you get married. Any closer to the big day, and you’ll be too busy with last-minute details to enjoy yourself. And it's too much to ask guests to buy multiple presents in a short time span.
Although it may be difficult to pick a date when everyone is available, it's best to plan around a holiday (religious or nonreligious) if you're inviting out-of-towners, and they'll be more likely to make the trip. But if most guests are local, evenings are a good option, too. If your planning a big shower with alot of attendees, don't beat yourself up too much, you'll have to accept that it may not be possible to find a date where everyone is available. Do the best you can with the majority and realize that it's up to them to make the effort to be there and share the experience with the people they care about. Once a date is set, invites should go out a month to six weeks in advance.

Denver Florists, Recipe with Red Wine

Do you have an event or a get-together and need a great recipe? Try this one and let us know what you think.
RED WINE POACHED PLUM TARTLETS

Ingredients

All-purpose flour, for surface
Pate Sucree ( SEE RECIPE BELOW, at end )
1 cup fruity red wine, such as Beaujolais or pinot noir
3 cups water
1 cup sugar
1 bay leaf
Pinch fine salt
8 red plums, sliced 1/4-inch thick
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice

Directions

1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees. On a lightly floured surface, roll out pate sucree into 1/8-inch-thick discs. Cut each disc into 16 four-inch rounds and fit into 3-inch fluted tartlet tins. Pierce bottoms with the tines of a fork. Freeze for 15 minutes.

2.Line each shell with parchment paper and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove weights and parchment. Return to oven, and bake until bottoms are just turning golden, about 5 minutes more. Transfer to wire racks; let cool for 5 minutes. Remove shells from tin; let cool completely.

3.Bring wine, water, sugar, bay leaf, and a pinch of salt to a boil in a medium-size pan, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to barely a simmer and add plums. Poach plums in batches for about 5 minutes, or until tender but still holding their shape. Remove from pan with a slotted spoon and place on a parchment-lined rimmed baking sheet; let cool. Remove skins from plums and arrange six or seven slices in each shell.

4.Discard all but 1 cup of the poaching liquid and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Combine the cornstarch and orange juice and whisk into poaching liquid. Cook, stirring constantly, until translucent, about 3 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes, and then brush over the top of each tart. Serve immediately.

Can't find Pate Sucree at the store? here's a recipe

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons sugar
2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, chilled, and cut into small pieces
2 large egg yolks
1/4 cup ice water

Directions

1.In the bowl of a food processor, pulse flour and sugar together for a few seconds to combine. Add butter to the flour mixture, and process until mixture resembles coarse meal, about 20 seconds. In a small bowl, lightly beat egg yolks and ice water until combined. With machine running, pour egg mixture in a slow, steady stream through feed tube. Pulse just until dough holds together, no more than 30 seconds.

2.Divide dough into two balls. Flatten each into a disc and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight.

all the girls get together at a spa for a day of bliss with manicures, pedicures, facials, massages or anything else they offer. It's a great way to be pampered. Creat invitations on linen paper and attach them to bottles of bat oils, soaps, hand towels, etc.

Let us know what you think. Have you tried this already?  let us know how it was.

Denver Forists, Sept. 11th, 9/11 moment of silence

We would like to ask everyone to pause at some point today and give a moment of silence in tribute to the Sept. 11th attack. It has been 11 years now and still in some ways still feels so much more recent. Please support our first rsponders and our troops in any way you can.    Thank You

Lauren Moffat Wedding Nails

It's Fashion Week here Cherry Creek and in New York City and for the next couple of days, We'll be sharing some of our favorite makeup, hair, and nail looks from backstage.

First up, designer  Lauren Moffat and her oh-so-sweet nails. With two coats of OPI's Don't Touch My Tutu as a base (it would also look pretty all by itself), the artists painted diagonal caps on each nail in either bright orange or a mix of yellow and green (which blended to a super-chic mustard hue). The mod colors looked so cool and would be cute for a retro-style wedding.

Like it? I'm kind of digging the olive green polish and would honestly wear it alone on short, round nails.
